Our Process

Our intent, with every piece of furniture, is to build in a way such that we are creating the antiques of tomorrow.  Our techniques and materials are those that have been used for centuries, yet are seldom found today: hand stitching, natural jute and burlap, hog and horsehair.  Fine upholstery is an art form.  It is a lifetime's work that  that requires mastery and passion.  It gives us tremendous pleasure to share it with you.

Phase 1: We first start out with a knot-free kiln-dried frame, assembled with doweled joints.  Seat blocks are added for extra strength.  With reasonable care our frames should last for 200 years.

Phase 2: Next, we use a natural jute webbing for support.

Phase 3: We hand tie our seat springs with an eight-way tieing process to ensure longevity.

Phase 4: We then hand tie the back springs in the same fashion.

Phase 5: A layer of burlap covers both seat and back springs.  This is hand stitched to each spring for extra strength and to contain the next level of hair.

Phase 6: We then hand stitch a mix of horse and hog hair into the burlap to create padding and thickness.  Next, another layer of burlap is added to shape and contain the hair.

Phase 7: The hair is then regulated and hand stitched to create edges and a profile.

Phase 8: One more small layer of hair is added to fill in any crevices and a covering of muslin is added for smoothness.  The muslin also acts as a second layer of containment if the outer layer of fabric should ever be torn or wear through aging.
